Their eyes were watching god 6-12
The second part of the book janie begins a "new" life after jody dies. Right before he dies when he is weak she finally gets the strength after all these years to stand for her self and speak her mind. She finally tells him that he never let her express her emtions. She can express this to him now because he is to weak to do anything about it. So after jody dies she mourns for a while just to please the people in the town so they dont gossip about her. She begins to wear her hair down in a braid which i think defines who she is gives her a sense of identity. Then she meets Tea cake a very repectful man but not wealthy man but she finds him interesting because even though he is not wealthy he does have respect for her and that is what janie wants in a man. I think that janie has finally found her match that she has been loking for all her this time. This when she begins her "new" life she is living the way she wants not the way nanny wants her to live. A part in chapter 9 that caught my attention was when it said on page 89 " She hated the old woman who had twisted her so in the name of love." I dont how she could think this about the woman who rasied her. I dont think she blame her grandmother for not loving the way she wanted because she did what she wanted with tea cake, so she could have changed any time she wanted too. I think that she just wanted to blame someone for not being happy. In these chapters janie begins to live life the way she wants to not like everyone else wants her to live.

I myself was not suprised to see that Jody died, in fact I was kinda happy that Janie could find another man. Hurston I feel is going against that typical Nanny type. Where you should respect your elders, and learn from them. Somehow, along with true womanhood, I feel as though she is trying to tell the younger generation to be proud of their heritage, use the old dictation but never lose yourself. Always do what you want to do, and it shouldn't have anything to do with the older generations!
I feel like with Janie and Judy it was too little too late. Although she finally stated how she felt it never got put into action becaue he died right after.
I agree that it seems that Janie is finally finding the life that she has wanted for herself with Tea Cake. Janie was able to find qualities in Tea Cake that she has always desired in a man. Tea Cake treats Janie with respect and it is evident that he truly cares about her. Janie doesn't feel pressured to be someone that she is not when she is with him. I am really starting to like Janie and Tea Cake as a couple because Janie has been able to stay true to herself while she has been with him. This is obviously something that Janie really values.
I definately think that after Jody's death, Janie became aware of who she was and was not affraid to do what she wanted and that was to wear her hair down. I think she started to build the identity that she had longed for. I also think Tea Cake has helped her during this transition period and made her feel comfortable with who she is. Tea Cake has been the only one that allows Janie to feel how she wants to feel, which is why I think that Tea Cake may continue to be a part of her life.
I found that statement shocking as well. I think that, as you said, this truly is a "new" chapter in Janies life. Even as her friends counseled her about Tea Cake she knew what she wanted and what she was going to do. Shes not following anyone elses plan anymore.
I agree that the second part is like a "new" life for Janie. It's a step away from her two unhappy marriages where she finally gains her independence and stick up for herself. I definitely agree that when she started wearing her hair down gave her a sense of identity. Since the beginning of the book, her hair was always a way of identification for her not even for herself but by everyone else. I think the respect that Tea Cake gave her was all she needed and not the wealthy money that she had up to that point.
